August 18, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The deputy chairperson of the Sudanese Sovereign Council General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who is better known as Hemeti has urged South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit to respect opposition choices and appoint General Johnson Olony as governor of Upper Nile state, according to several government officials.

Hemeti who arrived in Juba on Monday for peace talks between the government of Sudan and opposition groups reportedly urged Kiir to appoint opposition nominee for governor of Upper Nile state during a closed-door meeting which took place in the presidency on Monday evening.

“The deputy chairman of the Sovereign Council has urged President of state of South Sudan to appoint the opposition candidate for the Upper Nile state. This would be in the best interest of the revitalized peace agreement,” one Sudanese government official told Nyamilepedia this evening.

Another South Sudan government official confirmed the development and say the government of South Sudan would file an official response to the Sudanese deputy chairperson over the issue.

Olony was nominated by the SPLM-IO for the governorship of the Upper Nile state which has been allocated to the main armed opposition group. President Salva Kiir has however rejected his appointment claiming he would jeopardize security in the area.
