February 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The European Union (EU) on Monday condemned the ongoing violence and continued fighting in South Sudan’s Yei River state.

In recent days, fighting has continued to intensify in some parts of the country despite a report by the UN early this month that “political violence” in the country has declined.

In a statement issued on Monday, the EU said it is concerned by the continued fighting in Yei River state between government forces and those loyal to the holdout opposition South Sudan National Democratic Alliance (SSNDA) led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka.

“The EU Delegation follows with deep concern the ongoing violence in Yei River and Amadi States and condemns violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, and the Revitalized Agreement,” the statement seen by the Nyamilepedia partly read.

South Sudan government and opposition groups in September 2018 signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement that collapsed a year later. Gen. Cirilo who is the leader of NAS as well as the holdout opposition alliance, SSNDA, is not a part of this revitalized agreement that he said does not address the question of federalism and the number of states during the transitional period.

The agreement was signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the ongoing civil war following talks in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
