Dr. Ekuru Aukot expelled from his own party, Thirdway Alliance

September 9, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — A senior Kenyan lawyer and politician,  Dr. Ekuru Aukot, one of the presidential candidates in the 2017 Kenyan general election, Founder and Chairman of the Thirdway Alliance Kenya, has been expelled from his own political party.

According to a statement extended to Nyamilepedia Press, Dr. Aukot was expelled from his own party, Thirdway Alliance Kenya, allegedly because of financial impropriety, lack of transparency and other misconducts.

Announcing his expulsion, the Secretary-General Fredrick Okango and Chairman Miruru Waweru on Tuesday said the decision was made by the party’s National Executive Committee after the former failed to show up before the party’s disciplinary committee.

“Our beloved party leader Ekuru Aukot has been  expelled as a member and dismissed a party leader by our National Executive Committee effective today.” Read part of the statement from NEC.

Dr. Aukot is accused of assaulting the Deputy party leader, Dr Angela Mwikali, financial impropriety, self-enrichment and lack of transparency.

He is also accused of violating Chapter Six of the Constitution for allegedly defying a court order in a Children abuse case.

The expulsion came after a battle that has been going on for a while.

The party’s Secretary-General Fredrick Okango said the decision was made “without any malice, bias or hatred”, and the party insists on zero tolerance to impunity.

The party shared a statement that explained chronological evens that led to Dr.Oukot’s expulsion that reads:

“On the 26th of April, the Party leader Intentionally skipped the NEC meeting without an apology, it was later learnt that he was on holiday in Diani. However, in a brazen display of impunity, he sent his armed GSU bodyguard accompanied by two goons and the Organizing secretary to disrupt and stop the properly convened NEC meeting,” read  the statement.

“The chairman of the disciplinary committee that was constituted by the NEC and which was sworn in by an advocate of the High Court emailed the party leader the charge sheet together with a notice to appear before the committee on 4th September 2020… Dr. Aukot did not appear nor did he send an apology,”  the statement went on.

In response, Dr. Aukot took to social media to ease the tension by telling his followers that the matter was in court, saying:

“My attention has been drawn to my purported expulsion from Thirdway Alliance Kenya, a party I founded and supported to date including hosting it at my chambers #EALawConsulting. This action is despite two matters before court. I urge members to remain calm. The battle just began.” Dr. Aukot twitted

The party has responded through social media by releasing more in-depth documents that attempt to explain the allegations.

“Kindly read the report of our party’s Disciplinary report on the conduct of our party former leader Dr Ekuru Aukot” Reads statement from the Official twitter handle of the Thirdway Alliance Kenya

Supporters and intellectuals are responding through social media calling for a peaceful resolution to a matter that may end up in court.

Dr. Aukot finished in the fifth position after Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Joseph Nyagah and Abduba Dida in the 2017 general election.

Aukot is popularly known for sponsoring a Bill to amend the Kenya Constitution popularly known as Punguza mzigo Bill through a popular initiative in 2019.

Kenya will return to the polls in 2022 and this internal wrangling could have severe consequences on the Thirdway Alliance in the next elections.
