October 31st 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s former First Vice-President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, who is also the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition  (SPLM-IO), has arrived in Juba, the South Sudan capital.

The visit for Machar will be the first of its kind since he fled the capital Juba more than two years ago following a bloody fighting at the country’s Presidential Palace, J1 between guards loyal to him and those loyal to President Salva Kiir Mayardiit.

Machar, the former vice president, fled to neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo in 2016 following the fierce fighting which killed hundreds of people. He later traveled to South Africa, where he was held under house arrest until earlier this year.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon signed the long-awaited revitalized peace deal last month in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the ongoing civil war.

The deal, also signed by other opposition leaders, is part of IGAD efforts to try to end the ongoing civil war which has engulfed the young nation since December 2013.

Upon arrival at Juba International Airport, Machar was accompanied by senior opposition officials including the deputy chairperson of the group’s national committee for information and public relations, Manawa Peter Gatkuoth.

He was also accompanied by his wife Angelina Teny who is also the Chairperson of National Committee for Security and Defense.
