March 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The border crossing between Sudan and South Sudan will resume next month as well as the activation of the safe demilitarized buffer zone, the Sudanese Chief of General Staffs told reporters on Monday.

A joint security committee between Sudan and South Sudan met in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Monday to discuss the issue on the border-crossing and the activation of the safe demilitarized buffer.

Sudanese Chief of General Staffs, Gen. Kamal Abdul Maarouf who heads the Sudanese side of the committee told reporters in Khartoum on Monday that the parties have agreed to open the borders between the two countries and to also activate the buffer zone within a month.

“In addition to activating the demilitarized zone, we have agreed to open border crossings between the two countries within a month from now,” he said adding: “no troops would be allowed to move beyond the line.”

He said the resumption of border crossing between the two countries will help foster good relationship between the two countries and will ease economic integration between the two sisterly countries.

“We look forward to a close relationship through the opening of the border-crossing and the subsequent measures to take care of the common interests of the two countries and the two people,” Gen. Kamal said.

For his part, South Sudan’s Defense Minister, Kuol Manyang Juuk reiterated his country’s keenness to “enforce all procedures related to the opening of the border crossings and the safe demilitarized zone.”
