Dec 7, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — A grenade attack at a restaurant in the national capital,  Juba, South Sudan, left multiple injured on Sunday evening, according to police spokesman.

According to eyewitnesses, the grenade was thrown by a motorcycle rider whose bike did not have number plates.

They said that he stopped outside the restaurant, threw the grenade and sped off from the location.

The police Spokesperson, Gen. Daniel Justin confirmed the news saying that the incident occurred around 8.00 pm.

“Yes, it happened yesterday at around 8 pm. There is a restaurant that is facing the main road on Tombura Street,” Gen Justin said while speaking to local radio station.

The police general explained that the eight people who got hurt were rushed to Juba Military hospital.

“Someone came riding a motorcycle and hurled a grenade. The grenade fell on a table, if it had fallen on the ground it would have hurt many more people. It fell on the table, exploded and injured about eight people whom we took to the Juba Military Hospital, “he added.

Gen. Justin said that the police have opened investigations into the attack.

“We have now formally opened a case and we are carrying out investigations. No one was killed in the attack and we have not yet made any arrests but investigations are ongoing,” Justin added.

Although the situation remains calm, the police spokesman appealed  to the citizens to cooperate with the authorities as it will enable them to maintain security in the area and the entire country especially right now as the citizens are about to celebrate the festivities.

“We will deploy our personnel in the suburbs. We also appeal to the citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and be security conscious. The situation at the moment is calm and there are no reports of any major crime,” Justin said.

Despite that South Sudan has been in war for years, grenade attacks on unarmed civilians are not very common; however, attacks by “unknown gunmen” are very rampant in major cities like Juba.
