May 4, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — Sudan’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) has violated the UN arms embargo on neighbouring South Sudan by supplying weapons, according to the panel of experts that monitors the embargo.

The GIS transferred three shipments consisting mostly of Kalashnikov-type assault rifles and related ammunition to Lieutenant General Akol Koor Kuc, the director general of the Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service (NSS), the panel said in its latest report, which was released on 30 April.

The weapons were delivered by an Antonov An-74 transport aircraft operated by Green Flag Aviation, a Sudanese company the panel said is controlled by the GIS.

In July 2018, as South Sudan’s then warring parties were preparing to sign what would become the revitalized peace agreement to end the war, the UN Security Council imposed arms embargo on the world’s youngest nation for human rights violation.

This was in addition to sanctions on senior government officials including to the country’s then First Vice President Taban Deng, now vice-president, who has been accused by the world body of human rights violation and involvement in actions derailing the implementation of the peace deal.
