Oyai, Cirilo meets Machar in Khartoum over opposition unity
November 5th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s former army chief Oyai Deng Ajak and ex-minister of youth, culture and sport, Cirilo Hiteng have met the main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar at his residence in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
Sources told the Nyamilepedia from Khartoum that the three men discussed the need for opposition unity to foster change in the world’s youngest nation as some says the government of South Sudan under President Salva Kiir is lacking the political will needed to implement the revitalized peace agreement.
“Yes that’s true, General Oyai Deng Ajak and Cirilo Hiteng of the Real-SPLM led by [Pagan] Amum met the chairman yesterday in Khartoum,” the source told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon.
“They have discussed the fact that the opposition unity is need at this crucial time President Kiir’s government is not sincere to the opposition and the people of South Sudan on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement,” the source added.
The agreement signed by Kiir with opposition groups including Machar’s SPLM-IO in Khartoum last year provided for the formation of what would be the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).
However, as the deadline for that government formation looms, important issues such as the implementation of the security arrangements (establishment of unified army, police and security arrangements and determination of the number of states) are still pending.
The government insists it will form that unity government next week. The opposition – SPLM-IO on the top of them – wants that action postponed for at least six month to allow for the implementation of the those pending issues.
