Kiir brings back ex-foreign minister to politics as advisor, special envoy

August 22nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has brought back to politics – as presidential advisor and special envoy – former foreign minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin.

Marial who also served as information minister before his appointment in July 2013 as foreign minister was dismissed in 2016 after his referral to prominent academic Luka Biong as foreigner ignited backslash .

He was the longest-serving foreign minister for South Sudan since the world’s youngest country gained it’s independence from Sudan in July 2011.

A medical doctor, Marial served in various government capacities before his appointment as foreign minister in 2013.

He served in then Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) as minister of regional cooperation between 2006 and 2009 and as minister of commerce and industry from 2009 to June 2010.

It was that year when he was appointed as information minister until South Sudan became independent in 2011 and maintained the position following the independence until July 2013.

Marial also served as the State Minister of International Cooperation, Government of National Unity, Khartoum, Sudan.
