Peace implementation facing challenges – opposition alliance
July 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in September last year by several opposition groups on one side and the government on the other is facing a number of challenges, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) said in a statement on Tuesday.
South Sudan government and opposition groups last year signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa following months of tough negotiations in the Sudanese capital Khartoum under the auspices of then Sudanese president Omar Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir.
In a statement marking the 8th independence anniversary, the opposition umbrella led by Josephine Lagu said the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement is facing a number of challenges including the security arrangements.
“There are a number of challenges facing R-ARCSS, especially in the security arrangements. It is an aspect very crucial to the smooth implementation of the peace agreement,” the group said in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.
“Two months have now elapsed since the Parties agreed on the 3rd of May to extend the Pre-Transitional Period for six more months. These challenges require all the parties to put their heads together so as to work out how to get the remaining tasks implemented on time,” the statement added.
The statement further urged the international community to support the implementation of the agreement so that the parties are helped to do away with the challenges the group said is hampering their efforts to implement the agreement.
“Finally, we call upon the friends of South Sudan including Troika to support in all ways possible the implementation of the peace agreement which is the last hope for our long suffering people,” the statement said.
