June 20th, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudanese Refugees living in Kakuma Refugee Camp have received housing materials and life-saving items from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in compensation for their rain-damaged houses and belongings affected by the rain that destroyed a number of homes in the last few weeks.

The relief implemented by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) was provided by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UNCHR, in response to the emergency caused by torrential rains that left many refugee families homeless.

The South Sudanese refugees commended the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for their unwavering support and timely action.

“UNHCR has responded positively and in a timely manner, after having lost almost everything in our homes because of the rains, including our food rations”said one resident interviewed by the Nyamilepedia in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Some of the materials received by the affected refugees include cooking appliances, housing materials, blankets, mats, food rations and other life-saving items.

South Sudanese refugees are still fleeing from the country for their safety due to ongoing heightened insecurity experienced in some parts of the country despite the peace agreement.

The warring parties in South Sudan signed a peace agreement on September 12, 2018, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, raising little hopes that the South Sudanese refugees may return to their home country and rebuild their livelihoods; however, lack of political will among the politicians casts doubts to whether the refugees may return home soon; when and where!
