SPLM-IO says preparation under way to celebrate Dr. Machar’s release
June 18th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition movement, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition under the leadership of the country’s former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon said it will organize events across the region as it mark the release of the prominent opposition leader from South Africa where he has been under house arrest for two years.
The SPLM-IO’s Chairman of the National Committee for Foreign Relations Cde. Stephen Par Kuol said in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia that the SPLM-IO will celebrate the final release of the Chairman and Commander in Chief which has been the focal point for the group for the last two years.
“Dear Comrades, as we have been demanding for the last two years, our Chairman, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon is finally on the walk to freedom and that we must expressly celebrate by forming ad-hoc technical committees to professionally organize the worldwide event of celebrating release of our chairman and his reception in the regional countries of Ethiopia and the Sudan,” the statement said.
The top opposition diplomat ordered followers and members of the armed opposition movement to raise fund for the facilitation of the reception of the chairman who is due in Addis Ababa in few days this week.
“Raising funds to facilitate the reception of our chairman in Addis-Ababa and in Khartoum. Thus, the leadership of the SPLM/SPLA(IO) is hereby directing all the chapters and the supporters of the SPLM(IO) all over the world to mobilize sufficient resources to support those two missions as they will be bearing the brunt of our Chairman’s reception,” the statement said.
The statement said the opposition group will write to the region to thank them for the good gesture that they have accorded to the SPLM-IO by releasing their leader who have been under detention for almost two and half years.
“Thanking the region and the international community for kind gesture of the releasing of our Chairman to come and provide the needed leadership toward peace in our country. We must do that by writing a signed petition of gratitude by our people both at home and in Diaspora to the IGAD leadership,” it added.
The diplomat said the movement will encourage the people in IDPs and refugee camps especially those who fled the five-year old conflict to the neighboring Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda to come our under the guardian of the SPLM-IO leadership for the sack of avoiding low profile for the event.
“Encouraging our people in the refugee camps and our Diaspora Communities in the major capitals of the western world to come out in large numbers to celebrate this historical event. Our communities in Near Diaspora (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan) will celebrate under the guidance of our leadership in those countries to ensure that it is carried in low profile,” the statement further said.
