SPLM-IO Governor of Jonglei State unveil new state cabinet
April 17th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s SPLM-IO governor of Jonglei State under the leadership of the country’s former First Vice President Riek Machar Teny has unveiled a new state government on Monday.
In a press statement dated 16th April and extended to the Nyamilepedia by the office of the governor, Alier Samuel Ateny, the opposition governor appointed 6 ministers beside two advisors.
The new cabinet includes Garbriel Chal as Minister of Information,Youth, Culture, Sport and Heritage, John Panther as Minister of Physical Infrastructure, Azra Kuol Dhieu as Minister of local government, Kou Ater Nyok as Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, John Mogai Konydit as Minister of Agriculture, Peter Amol Mabior as Minister of Education and Gender and Diang Yak Bany Health.
He appointed John Adoor Deng and Majok Agany Aguto as senior advisers for Political Affairs and Social & Economic Affairs Respectively.
Jonglei state is one of the four states created by Machar after breaking up the former Jonglei state into four different political units. The four are Jonglei, Bieh, Phow and Pibor States.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit also dissolved the previous system of 10 states in October 2015 through a degree he called “The Establishment Order” the president himself read out on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation.
Shortly after the announcement of the establishment order, regional and international community condemned the government’s initiative and called on the government to abolish the 28 states and revert to 10 states system. In 2017, Kiir instead defied the call by the international community and extended the number of states into 31 beside the Abyei Special Administrative Area.
