July 09, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Speaking on South Sudan’s 4th independent anniversary, Susan Elizabeth Rice, the United States’ National Security Advisor and the former United States’ Ambassador to the United Nations, affirms the commitment of the United States to stand with the peace loving people of South Sudan and warns of punishment for those leaders who are determined to drive South Sudan into abyss.

“The United States will not abandon the people of South Sudan and their right to live freely and at peace in their own country. We will continue to stand with all those who dream of a better tomorrow.” Amb. Susan Rice says.

The United States stresses frustration with Salva Kiir administration for failing to protect the citizens, leaving its responsibilities to the international community and the United Nations.

The Obama administration, for the first time, acknowledges that the leadership of Salva Kiir has lost legitimacy and warns that the extension of its mandates is against democracy.

“Over the past 19 months, the government has abdicated its responsibilities, failed to protect its citizens, and squandered its legitimacy.” Amb. Susan Rice says.

“Instead of negotiating a resolution to the conflict, it has subverted democracy and unilaterally extended its mandate” She continued.

As President Obama stated in April this year, Amb. Susan Rice reiterates that the conflict in South Sudan is not only a threat to South Sudan but also to the entire region.

The United States calls on the South Sudanese leaders to silence the guns and establish a legitimate Transitional Government of National Unity that will serve the aspirations of South Sudanese people equally.

“Through all these challenges, your neighbors, our regional partners, have gone to great lengths to try to bring the warring parties together and forge an end to this conflict. The United States continues to support these efforts. The path ahead is clear. Violence will not bring about a solution. The South Sudanese parties must establish immediately a transitional government that can serve with legitimacy and represent the needs of the people of South Sudan.” Amb. Rice says.

The United States promises to work hard for the people of South Sudan to achieve a lasting peace and justice, and warns to punish those who abuse the people of South Sudan.

“The United States will continue to work hard to help you to achieve lasting peace and justice. We will hold accountable those who abuse the people of South Sudan. And, the United States along with the international community will punish those determined to drive South Sudan into the abyss.” Amb. Rice says.

While visiting East Africa in May this year, the Secretary of State, John Kerry, announced that the United State will contribute $5 millions US dollars toward establishment of Hybrid court to try the South Sudanese leaders who are implicated in the conflict.

In other reports, president Obama will visit the region this month with hopes to push the South Sudanese principals, Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar Teny, to sign a major peace agreement that would end the conflict.

Many agreements that have been signed in the past 18 months have been violated. The region, and the TROIKA, which comprises  of the United States, United Kingdom and Norway have threatened punishments and sanctions but all have passed with very minimal effect on the peace process.

It’s yet to be seen what the new position of the United States would mean to Salva Kiir regime, IGAD-Plus Peace process and the conflict in the country.

  • America midwifed the birth of South Sudan, yet abandoned the young nation to self-destruction under their watch. Wasted human lives and innocent civilians, destroyed properties. Who is responsible for these atrocities? Can there be life after all this. Every second of every minute, every minute of every hour, every hour of every day and every day of every week is DEATH IN THE THOUSANDS. They don’t matter in the eyes of the World. So who cares????????????????????.Is it the UN, US,AU, who cares? THE WORLD MUST CARE.

  • Kiir’s administration as already failed/expired, the step he has taken will not lead S. Sudan into the way of peace, Democracy, good governance and prosperity for all.
