On the eve of South Sudan’s Independence on July 9, 2011, the people of Solidarity with Southern Sudan celebrated a seder dinner and candlelight vigil in preparation for their big day. Sr. Kathy Arata of Solidarity with Southern Sudan came up with the idea for the 101 Days of Prayer campaign that so many Catholics in the U.S. and throughout the world participated in. South Sudan declared Independence on July 9, 2011 following a referendum vote in January 2011 in which the people of Southern Sudan chose to secede from the North.
