April 21, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — Cattle raiders from South Sudan’s Warrap state have attacked a village in Unity state’s Mayom county killing and wounding an unknown number of innocent civilians, sources said from Bentiu on Tuesday.

One source said a group of armed youth as well as “military” personnel were involved in the attack which the source said killed a unknown number of innocent civilians.

“Heavily armed youth and military personnel from Ajak Kuach of Twic Mayardiit have attacked the village and the cattle camp this morning at Bieh Payam,” the source said from Bentiu.

Attack condemned

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the Bul Intellectuals’ Forum (BIF) said they condemns the attack against innocent civilians.

The statement urged governments from Unity and Warrab states to address the longtime border cattle raiding which has killed hundreds of people throughout the years.

“The Bul Intellectuals Forum condemns in the strongest term possible the recent cattle raiding incident in Bieh Payam of Mayom County, Unity State by raiders from the neighboring Warrap State on 21st April 2020,” the statement partly reads.

“We call on both State governments and local authorities to bring culprits to book and resuscitate previous efforts of cross-border dialogues to promote peaceful coexistence between communities along the borders of the sisterly states.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families of Bul Community at home and abroad. As intellectuals, we are concerned by the recurring cattle rustling incidents and insecurity that have been prevailing in the area for the last three years.

“In conclusion, we urge the Presidency to speed up the formation of State and local governments to help address this sporadic skirmishes and hold perpetrators to account.”
