The Vice President for Gender was delegated on September 2, 2021 by President Kiir to lead the delegation of South Sudan to Washington to represent the country before the UN General Assembly on his behalf.

In a statement extended to Nyamilepedia, Mrs. Garang led the delegation to Worship D.C on Monday and describes the move as a “great honor” for her to speak on behalf of the head of state before the UN General Assembly.

“The Vice President is honoured to be delegated by H.E. President Salava Kiir Mayardit to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York”, the statement reads on VP’s official page.

According to the statement, the VP and her accompanying delegation will remain in Washington D.C for a week before they leave for New York where the assembly will take place.

“The delegation will spend 1 week in Washington D.C. meeting with senior U.S. government officials before travelling to New York”, the statement added.

The General Assembly was opened on Tuesday, 14 September, however, the first day of the high-level general debate will be on Tuesday, 21 September 2021.

Vice president Nyadeng Garang will be the first female Vice President in the country to represent the world’s youngest nation before UN General Assembly since the independence.

Mrs. Mabior is so far one out of five Vice Presidents who represent president Kiir outside the country as the four other vice presidents and president Kiir, continue to observe the slow implementation of the peace agreement.

Although there have been criticisms on how Kiir continues to keep his main rival Machar out of spotlight and from leaving the country, the First Vice President has not expressed interest or willingness to travel so far unlike when he was detained in South Africa.
