July 29, 2021 – Authorities in Rumbek of Lakes State described as “unfounded” and “biased” a report by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on extrajudicial killings allegedly orchestrated by some senior State government officials.
On Monday, UNMISS reported that it was “deeply concerned” with the alarming level of extrajudicial executions of criminal suspects in Lakes and Warrap States.
In parts of the report, UNMISS reveals that some of the extrajudicial killings involved firing squads on suspected criminals before community and family members to deter the rest from committing similar crimes.
However, in a press release seen by Nyamilepedia, the Acting Minister of Information and Communication in Lakes State, William Koji Kirjok, trashed the report saying it is void of substantial evidence.
“In this regard, the government of Lakes State categorically dismiss UNMISS report as unfounded, baseless and bias, the Lakes State government would want UNMISS to substantiate its reports now and in the future to avoid misleading opinions and maintain a responsible working relationship with the State Government,” he says. “Lakes State government would invite UNMISS to provide credible information contained in its release,” the statement continues.
Mr. Koji said the report came in a moment when the international community, which UNMISS is part of, was blaming the government of South Sudan for failing to protect its citizens even when this is something the state has acted upon.
“The UN are members of the international community and they are blaming us for not protecting the lives and properties of innocent civilians but currently this is what the government is doing. The government is protecting the lives of the citizens and their properties from criminals,” he said.
The Acting Minister said the Governor of Lakes State, Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor was not executing criminals under his administration but that he is “scaring” them away from committing crimes.
“The current governor is not killing people. The current governor has a capacity of arresting criminals and is scaring away the criminals from road ambushes, raping women as well as scaring away the criminals from continuous revenge killings in this community,” Koji said.
“That is why the whole community and the youth are appreciating the current leader and the community is appreciating the decision made by the president for the appointment of (Gen) Rin Tueny Mabor as the governor of Lakes State,” he said.
Koji urged the public to dismiss the report with the utmost contempt it deserves adding that the crime rate in the state was at a record low under the leadership of the current governor.
“We are saying they should work freely in the state without any threat. Such a report is not good and should not be tolerated. The security situation since the arrival of the governor is calm,” he said.
“There are no rape cases, no road ambushes and there is a kind of freedom of movement compared to that time where everyone was in prison. People would urinate in the room but now people can defecate freely in an open place without fear,” Koji added.
In June this year, members of the Lakes State community recommended a firing squad as one of the measures to prevent murders and crimes in the state.
The resolution was made during a meeting held at Freedom Hall in South Sudan’s capital Juba just a few days after the appointment of the Governor.
“Murder must be punishable by death and any revenge killings that occurred after the culprits have been detained must be punishable by death. Those who are found processing the guns without any support of law must be penalized and disarm by all means possible including the use of lethal weapons,” a source who attended the meeting and spoke to Nyamilepedia on condition of anonymity said in June.
