July 22nd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States said on Sunday that it is skeptical that two South Sudanese rival leaders, President Kiir, and opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar, would oversee a peaceful transition as the two leaders are not prepared to work together.

The United States comment came after the South Sudan government recalled its delegation on Thursday for consultation after asking the Sudanese mediation of a short break to consult.

In a statement issued on South Sudan this morning, the White House said the United States government is aware that South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny haven’t demonstrated leadership required to achieve peace.

“South Sudan’s political leaders, including President Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Machar, have not demonstrated the leadership required to bring genuine peace and accountable governance to South Sudan,” the statement said.

The statement further said the United States is skeptical that the two leaders would bring peace under any transition as they are not prepared to work together threatening that it would not be a guarantor of any agreement that does not achieve peace in the real sense.

“We remain skeptical that they can oversee a peaceful and timely transition to democracy and good governance. The United States will not be a guarantor of any agreement, and will not fund—or call for additional United Nations resources—to support the transitional government, in the absence of a sustained, demonstrated commitment to peace, inclusivity, financial accountability and good governance,” the statement further said.
