United States Pledge To Remain Neutral in South Sudan Politics Until Democratic Transition Materializes

October 23, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — While reaffirming the support of the United States for the people of the Republic of South Sudan and calling on all parties to uphold their commitments to peace and dialogue as outlined in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, the Senate reiterates their support for peace and “democratic transition”.

The resolution, which was introduced to the Senate on Tuesday by Senator Chris Coons, Johnny Isakson, Dick Durbin, and Todd Young summarized the conflict, its devastating consequences and support of the international community;

The Senators resolved, that it is the sense of the Senate to reaffirm the commitment of the United States to support peace in South Sudan and called for the following activities to be met:

“Call on the incumbent government and all other signatories of the R-ARCSS to create a secure and enabling environment for all relevant political leaders to participate actively in the formation of the RTGoNU and South Sudan’s political stabilization and post conflict development;

“Resolve peacefully the remaining political issues for negotiation during the Pre-Transitional Period, including agreement on the number and boundaries of states before the extended deadline of November 12, 2019;

“Establish a RTGoNU by November 12;

“Adhere to the cessation of hostilities and enable the delivery of humanitarian assistance and protection;

Immediately release all political prisoners and fulfill their responsibility to protect civilians; and

“Ensure respect for and full exercise of the right to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly;

Strongly pledging their support for the people of South Sudan, the United States call on the leaders to ensure that security arrangement is put in place in order for all leaders, parties and civilians to feel secure to participate in the transition to peace, democracy and stability.

“as important discussions within the [South Sudan] continue, all of the relevant political actors should feel secure in their ability to participate in [the] transition.” Reads part of the recent resolutions,

The Senators further endorse the Secretary of States, USAID and pledge more support for UN to closely monitor peace implementation and illicit activities such as money laundering, corruption and violence kleptocracy.

The United States further reiterated its commitments to maintain arms embargo and sanctions until South Sudan holds peaceful, free, fair and transparent democratic elections among other stringed conditions.
