December 22nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A new United Nations (UN) report has said that lack of political will, trust and funding are hampering implementation of South Sudan’s revitalized peace agreement signed last year.

The parties to the agreement are expected by the agreement to form a unity government in which President Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar will lead as president and first vice president.

That action has not however been taken given that a number of issues are still outstanding such as the security arrangements and the determination of the number of states and their boundaries.

The implementation of critical tasks continued to be delayed by the deficit of political will and trust, as well as financial constraints,” the UN said in a report obtained by Nyamilepedia.

The parties and other stakeholders repeatedly called upon the Government to honour its pledge to fully disburse $100 million to fund the implementation process,” the report added.

It said there is no transparency in the way the funds meant for peace implementation are spent as the government in Juba has continued to ask for more money from the international community.

While the Government has requested financial and material contributions from the international community, a lack of transparency and accountability continues to inhibit such support,” the report said.
