UN Humanitarian chief condemns attack against aid agencies and facilities in South Sudan

July 23rd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in South Sudan, Adnan Khan, has strongly condemned today’s attack against aid workers and facilities in the Maban county capital Bunj.

On Monday, violent youth burned down a WFP premise beside a UNHCR compound in Bunj after the youth went on rampage over unemployment in the county.

In a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia on Monday shortly after the attack, Khan said he personally condemn the attack against aid workers and aid facilities which took place on Monday in Maban county.

“I strongly condemn today’s attacks against aid workers and facilities in Maban and urge all involved to immediately cease such actions,” said Khan in the statement.

He pointed our that the aid workers in the country has the right to work anywhere in the country as prescribed by the country’s law.

“Aid workers, regardless of where they are from, sacrifice their time and all too often their safety to save people affected by the South Sudan crisis. They are free to work in any part of the country in line with the law of the land,” he added.

The Humanitarian Coordinator further called on all relevant authorities countrywide to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers in areas under their control to ensure that future threats are thwarted before they take effects.

In a related development, the UNHCR also condemned the attack against its compound in a statement published by the Radio Tamazuj on Monday.

“This is an act of senseless violence towards humanitarians and deeply regrettable. UNHCR deeply appreciates the hospitality and generosity of South Sudan and its people towards refugees. We strongly appeal to the authorities to ensure the safety and security of humanitarians,” UNHCR Deputy Representative and officer in charge in South Sudan, Vincent Kwesi Parker, said of the attack.
