TROIKA visits Machar, demands full implementation of the peace deal

September 9, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — A visiting delegation of the TROIKA representing the United States of America, United Kingdom and Norway met South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the leader of the main armed opposition in the capital, Juba.

“Visiting Troika Envoys representing the United States of America, United Kingdom and Norway, met the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, in his office today, Wednesday, 9th September, 2020” Machar’s spokesman, James Gatdet Dak, states.

According to James Gatdet, the meeting discussed the progress and challenges facing the implementation of the South Sudan peace agreement dubbed as the Revitalized Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan(R-ARCISS).

“The meeting discussed the progress made and challenges faced in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).” Dak said.

“The Troika countries reaffirmed their support to the implementation of the peace agreement.” He continued.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the US Special envoy, H.E. Stuart Symington called on the people of South Sudan and their leaders to finish the implementation of the pre-transitional period and move forward to establish the transitional period.

“We ask that all South Sudanese and their leaders come together now to do two things: first, to finish and resolve together in the interest of all South Sudan the final pages of the first chapter of the transition by selecting the final governor, by creating the new transitional national legislature and by moving forward to establish the other states and local governments this country needs to move forwards.” Said H.E. Stuart Symington

Although it is reaching two years, the South Sudanese have done very little in term of implementation leaving doubts if the warring parties will implement the peace agreement within the remaining one year.

Machar, who was the first vice president since independence, has led a widespread rebellion for the past seven years.

The first peace agreement collapsed in less than 4 months after Machar’s arrival in the capital, Juba, in 2016 and this revitalized peace deal has remained stagnated for the past two years leaving TROIKA and the international community worried if the South Sudanese leaders mean business.
