January 13th, 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Sudanese government announced on Saturday that thousands of barrels in crude oil has been lost as oil pipeline transporting South Sudanese oil to Port Sudan has leaked.

The Sudanese Ministry of Petroleum and Gas said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia that the loss is 2 barrels per hour bringing a total loss for a day to 48.

However, several sources in Port Sudan told the Nyamilepedia that the leak has been undiscovered for a number of weeks and was only discovered only yesterday morning when the administration in Port Sudan decided to send a team to check what was causing a slowdown of the oil flow.

The source said the crude oil leaked into an area of about 15 kilometers square east of the Sudanese town of Atbara.

According to the Ministry statement, the leak is caused by corrosion on the almost 20-year-old pipeline.

Authorities in Juba could not be immediately reached for comment.
