In a statement extended to media, the president congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for winning the trust of the American people.

“On behalf of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity and People of South Sudan, I congratulate President-elect Joseph R. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Devi Harris for winning the trust of the American people,” read the statement.

“We look forward to working constructively with your administration to build on our historic relations with the goal of consolidating peace in South Sudan, the region and globally. Once again, congratulations for winning the trust of American people,” the statement.

Briefing the media, the Press Secretary in the Office of the President, Ateny Wek Ateny, said South Sudan is looking forward to working with the newly elected leaders as well as strengthening the relations with the United States.

“We are looking forward to working with them because the United States is a super nation and its politics affects other countries in one way or the other. So we are looking forward to strengthening our relations with the United States so that we continue to enjoy better relationships and work for the betterment of this country South Sudan.”

Mr. Ateny said that he hopes the new U.S. administration would work towards lifting some of the sanctions as the country is engaged in the peace process.

“We are looking forward to the democrats coming now to power to lift the arms embargo because South Sudan is now seriously engaged in the peace process.” Kiir said.

According to Mr. Ateny, South Sudan is a country that U.S contributed to its birth and so he hoped the newly leaders will understand.

The sanctions, which include one of Kiir’s vice president Taban Deng Gai, are steering the wheel in South Sudan’s presidency.

According to Kiir, the army will not be unified or graduated if the sanctions are not lifted.

While South Sudan stake holders signed a peace agreement in 2018 on a three-year term, no much progress has been made so far.
