Breaking News: South Sudan Sentenced Officials – 4 Kenyans Included – To Life Imprisonment For Corruption

June 13, 2015(Nyamilepedia) —– The High Court of South Sudan has today sentenced at least 16 officials to life in prison for stealing over $14 millions USD from the young nation.

According to the defense lawyer, Agok Makur, who spoke after losing the cases, the officials were found guilty of forging signatures including that of president Salva Kiir and other officials.

Among the 16 officials are 4 Kenyans, one employee of Central Banks and others from President Salva Kiir’s office believe to be his close aides.

South Sudan High Court has determined that the incidents charged today were committed during the war between 2013 – 2015 alone. The money were stolen in the office and other withdrawn from the bank using fraudulent cheques.

The defense lawyer, Makur, pledges he will appeal some of the cases for his clients.

South Sudan, a nation which just emerged from many years of civil war with the north, has lost over $ 4 billions USD to corrupt politicians in the last few years.

Reacting to the news on social media, many South Sudanese support the charges, however, some have doubts that the officials are being framed to restore trust in investors and donors.
