July 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan opposition leader has expressed sadness over the demise of renowned academician, Dr. Leonzio Angole Onek, who passed away in a Kenyan hospital on Wednesday.

Last week, family members announced that professor Angole passed away at Valley Hospital in Kenya. The family said he died after a lengthy battle with cancer that infested him between late 2016 and early 2017.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the leader of People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) Dr. Hakim Dario said he is saddened to learn the demise of the renowned academician offering his condolences to the people of South Sudan and his Acholi people.

PDM is a holdout opposition group fighting the government of President Salva Kiir.

“The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) is extremely saddened to offer its sincere and deeply heartfelt condolences to the family of late Dr. Leonzio Angole Onek who suddenly died on 10th July 2019 after a short illness,” Dario said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia.

“PDM offers its condolences to the people of South Sudan, and to his immediate Acholi and Equatoria communities,” he added in the statement.

Dario praised the late professor over his academic achievements as well as his role to mediate a peaceful settlement between the government of neighbouring Uganda and the rebels Lord Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Konyi.

“He was a distinctive and distinguished academician of his generation. He first taught Biochemistry at Kenyan universities before returning home to his native country after the signing of the Comprehension Peace Agreement in 2005,” he said.

“He will be remembered as a great scholar, a seasoned politician, above all a faithful husband and a loving father,” he added.
