October 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s foreign minister Awut Deng has met the Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki in the capital Asmara over the ongoing peace process, a foreign ministry official said Monday.

The minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation met with the Eritrean President H.E Isaias Afewerki and briefed him on the ongoing peace process in South Sudan,” the foreign ministry official said.

The official who refused to be named said the foreign minister also discussed with the Eritrean leader the ongoing Sudanese peace process kicked off yesterday in Juba.

She discussed with him also the ongoing peace process and South Sudan efforst in achieving peace in Sudan and the whole region,” he official said.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after a dispute over who can lead the ruling party, SPLM, into elections due then for 2015.

The dispute led to a split in the army and a massacre in Juba of Nuer civilians later the triggered one of the bloodiest civil wars in the continent killing thousands and displacing millions.

A peace agreement collapsed in July 2016 following a fight at the presidential guards in Juba between forces loyal to president Kiir and those loyal to his then first deputy – now once again first vice president designate – Dr. Riek Machar.

A revitalized version of that agreement was signed in September last year and efforst are underway for its implementation.
