Jan 18, 2017(Nyamilepedia) —– South Sudan’s incumbent president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, relieved a two days old governor, Hon. Gabriel Gai Riam, who was appointed on Monday to lead the newly created Akobo State in rebel held territory.

Hon. Gabriel Gai Riam, an elderly politician from Akobo who served in former Jonglei state, was appointed this week on Monday and relieved today, Wednesday, through a presidential decree that was read on the state owned SSBC.

Hon. Gai was going to lead Akobo State, which was created last Saturday in former Bieh State of former Jonglei state.

Gai is a veteran who has served as a state’s minister of cabinet and parliamentary affairs in former Jonglei state and a visionary elder in his community but lacks support due to his allegiance to Salva Kiir’s government.

Although president Salva Kiir did not give a reason as to why Hon. Gai was sacked, Akobo remains one of the strongholds for the armed Opposition, SPLM/SPLA(IO), and Juba may need an active general to lead the combat in attempt to dislodge SPLA(IO).

According to the report, President Salva Kiir has appointed Lt. Gen. Johnson Gony Belieu, who led most of government operations in Upper Nile state, to replace Hon. Gabriel Gai Riam.

In other reports, Mr. Kiir sacked Hon Baba Medan Konyi of Boma State and replaced him with Maj. Gen Sultan Ismail konyi.

The two Murle politicians, who have been leaning on supporting Kiir’s government in formerly Pibor Administrative Area, have been wrangling over the leadership in Pibor.

While Hon. Baba Medan Konyi served as a deputy governor in former Jonglei State, Maj. Gen. Sultan Ismail Konyi, is a close aide to Deputy Minister of Defense Lt. Gen. David Yau Yau.

Although Gen. Salva Kiir and his current deputy, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, preach peace sometimes, Kiir appoints mostly active military generals to lead his new states suggesting that Juba could be preparing for more war than peace.

Although Salva Kiir has initiated a partial national dialogue, many critics believe that Kiir’s intentions of creating more states and investing in war are strategies to destroy the country, not to bring any peace and progress.

Despite creation of 28 states, war has continue to intensify in regions like Equatoria and Bhar el Ghazal that were relatively peaceful during the first two years of conflict and whether creation of more states will impose a permanent ceasefire remains to be seen!
