Speaking during the National COVID-19 conference at the Kenyatta international Conference Centre (KICC) Nairobi, the president asked parents to deliberate on how the schools can be reopened but not when they will reopen.

According to president Kenyatta lives and health of children are not a matter of debate and schools can only be reopened when their safety is guaranteed.

“Learning institutions should only be reopened when we have and can sufficiently guarantee the safety of all our children. Let us not focus on when schools will reopen but on how they will reopen,” he said.

Mr. Kenyatta said that regarding the schools reopening, the cabinet secretary, Prof George Magoha, will announce the re-opening and the procedure in which the schools will be re-opened as well as the school calendar once an agreement on safety measures is reached by all the stakeholders.

President Kenyatta extended the curfew for another 60 days, however, he changed the time of curfew from the current 5.00 am -9.00 pm to 11pm to 4am, starting Tuesday, September 29.

People can also gather at places of worship for upto two-thirds of their normal sitting arrangement but they should adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

He also raised the number of people who can attend burials and weeding ceremonies from 100 persons to 200 people.

Kenyatta further lifted the ban against selling alcohol in bars.

He also lifted the ban on restaurants with effect from tomorrow, September 29, much to the delight of the public which has been demanding for it.

These social joints will be allowed to operate until 10pm.

He emphasized on how far Kenya has came in the fight against COVD-19 and that Kenyans need to be more careful now than ever before.

“But we are the most vulnerable and fragile at the point where we think we have won”, he said.

“I am not saying this to belittle our achievements, but lean on the side of caution,” Uhuru added.
