April 17, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan information minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth has suspended the director of the state-ran South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC).

In a ministerial order issued on Friday, and which is effective today, Makuei said James Magok Chilim, was suspended for “his intransigence, disobedience and incompetence in the management of the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) in violation of the guiding principles of Broadcasting Corporation Act, 2013.”

The order – according to a coppy seen by Nyamilepedia – was exercised in accordance with the minister’s powers provided for in the Presidential Decree No.33/2020; and section 17 (2) read together with (7) and (8) of Broadcasting Corporation Act, 2013.

Makuei said the director was “suspended without pay until further notice,” adding that “Director General of South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) Mrs. Susan Alphonse shall act during the transition.”

It was not clear why the director was suspended. The information minister was accused by pass SSBC directors of monopolizing their work.

In 2017, South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) arrested Adil Faris Mayat, then SSBC director, on orders of Makuei after coming into confrontation with the minister.

In 2015, Khamis Abdel-Latif Kachuol, who served as a security advisor in the ministry of interior and former director-general of the state-run television, announced his intention to join the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO under now First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.
