May 23rd 2018 (Nyamilpedia) – The regional body, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has indefinitely adjourned the South Sudan peace talks after the round, which began last week, ended without any formal agreement between the parties.

The IGAD mediation on Tuesday unveiled a peace proposal that seek to divide power between different South Sudan opposition groups – both armed and none armed – and the South Sudan government under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit.

The IGAD proposal decided to give the government of the incumbent President 55% share and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) under the leadership of the country’s former first vice president Riek Machar to take 25% share, other political parties to have 20%.

The other political parties to divide their 20% as follow: South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) 10% SPLM-FDs 5% and parties under the government to get 5%. The proposal also called for the establishment of a third vice president to be occupied by other political parties and the current first vice president position to be occupied by Machar’s SPLM-IO and the current vice president position to be taken by the government as it is.

However, almost all the parties have rejected the proposal and the IGAD decided to call off this round of talks indefinitely.
