Government accepts parliament demand to pay civil servants, army

July 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has accepted to a demand by lawmakers that it first pay the salaries of the civil servants and members of the organized forces before returning to parliament for presentation of new annual budget, a lawmaker in Juba told Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.

South Sudan lawmakers last week expelled finance minister who aimed at presenting a draft annual budget to lawmakers for discussion. The MPs said they will not accept approving a new budget unless the government pays the civil servants their salaries which has not been paid for six months.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Tuesday in Juba, Veronica John, a lawmaker representing one of the constituencies for former Unity, said the government has agreed to pay the civil servants and the armed forces before returning to the parliament for discussion on the new budget.

She said the government has already started paying civil servants their salaries since last week and that the other months will start next week as well adding that the government minister of finance will return to parliament with his draft budget for deliberation next week.

“The government has agreed to pay the salaries of the civil servants and the army. They started having their salaries since last week for one month and another month will be started next week,” she said adding that “the minister of finance will return with the budget to us next week.”
