November 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A European Union envoy to South Sudan has called on the country’s leaders to move the world’s youngest country towards democratic, free and fair elections.

Sinead Walsh, the European Union’s South Sudan ambassador, said on Saturday that the country need someone who can lead the war-torn country towards a democratic, free and fair elections.

“We need everybody to be sitting around the round table talking and really trying to move towards a democratic process, elections and so on where people can actually be elected based on what they do for the citizens of this country,” she said.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 following a disputed national convention of the ruling SPLM party leading to split in the country’s SPLA (now SSPDF) army along tribal lines with Dinka members supporting Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, facing their Nuer counterparts supporting their fellow Machar.

A peace agreement was signed in 2015 but collapsed the following year. A revitalized version of that agreement was signed in September last year and the parties are struggling to implement its provisions.
