October 8,2021 — South Sudan’s central bank has on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, directed commercial banks to freeze accounts of five activists, who are connected to the People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA), a group of social and political activists who are calling for a regime change.
The PCCA, which emerged on 30 July this year, denounced Salva Kiir government in what it dubbed as “autocratic system that has become so dangerous and has subjected the [our] people to miserable life”.
In response, the government has carried an intensive crackdown on those who are believe to be behind the PCCA, arresting some and forcing others to flee the country.
According to a statement extended to Nyamilepedia, the Director-General of the Central Bank, Moses Makur Deng, has ordered the commercial banks to freeze and block bank accounts of Abraham Awolich, Rajab Mohandis, Wani Michael, James David Kolok and Kuel Aguer Kuel.
This decision affected the ring leaders of People’s Coalition for Civil Action whose call for political change has been trending on South Sudanese social media networks since July.
Four organizations connected to the PCCA are also frozen and that include the Sudd Institute, Organization for Responsive Governance, Okay Africa Foundation and Foundation for Democracy and Accountable Governance.
According to the Co-founder of the People’s Coalition for Civil Action, Rajab Mohandis, this decision will not deter them whatsoever from pursuing their goal, adding that the accounts did not have money anyway.
“These are not bank accounts that have money that could really cause challenges for us. But we know all the accounts are already frozen and blocked. So, the government doesn’t care about those who are working in those organizations,” he said.
Mohandis, who is the Executive Director of Organization for Responsive Governance, said they had limited funds in their institutional accounts and therefore the order will not have great impacts on themselves or their organizations.
“well, as it stands now, funds in our institutional account has been limited. We are not an organization that generates funds, we just get small projects and we spend the money we get on implementation of projects,” he explained.
