Juba, South Sudan,

July 29, 2021 – President Salva Kiir has revoked the appointment of Other Political Parties (OPP) leader Peter Mayen Majongdit to Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly.

The revocation comes three days ahead of the scheduled swearing-in of the 550 appointed legislators and 100 Members of the Upper House.

Mayen lost the seat together with several other OPP appointees to the reconstituted parliament in a Republican Decree read on the State-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation. The reason for the decision was not given.

The OPP leader was accused by some members of his party of nepotism and single-handedly appointing MPs without consultations with the party leadership structure.

On 17th May, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), one of the political parties under the umbrella of OPP submitted a letter of objection to legislators appointed on its card and asked President Salva Kiir to revoke such appointment.

The letter dated 16th May 2021 says the nomination was done by Mr. Mayen without due consultations with other party members.

“The PLP nominations to Members of Parliament to the R-TNLA that was presented to the office of the President by our Party Chairman Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit was neither nominated in consultations with party leadership nor approved but done single-handedly by Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit,” part of the statement reads.

Mr. Mayen raised eyebrows in May when he appointed a female Ugandan to a parliamentary seat just to be disowned by the local community she claimed to belong.

At a press statement on Wednesday, Mayen insisted that he was still the only center of power and command at OPP.

This is a developing story…
