Ring Deng Ading, the Minister of Information and Communication in Warrap State said in a press statement seen by Nyamilepedia that the youths thronged Kuajok in late May and wreaked havoc on residents.

“On 27 May 2021, armed youth from Mayom County of Unity State attacked and killed 15 persons and wounded 17,” the statement read in part.

“The killed include five children, two women, one girl, and seven elderly men at night, the Minister added.

Ading said the attack was the third of its kind being perpetrated by the noisy neighbors against the people of Warrap State.

“This has become the third attack by our neighboring Unity State’s youth. Therefore, we appeal to Unity State Government and Mayom County to strongly condemn and apprehend the culprits,” the Minister wrote, adding that peaceful co-existence was their motto.

The Minister expressed shock at the action of the youth and appealed to humanitarian organizations to intervene and salvage the situation.

“We are shocked by this violent act and we send our condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased,” the Minister said.

“Hence, we appeal to humanitarian agencies to assist the affected communities and children with food, shelter, and medicines,” he added.

The Minister called on the government to make efforts in protecting civilians saying they will do the necessary as communities to resolve the dispute.

“We call on the government and authorities in Unity State at all levels to protect civilians and these attacks cannot continue. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. As communities, we shall work together as neighbors to prevent such attacks.

Warrap State, like Jonglei and Pibor, is one of the most troubled regions within South Sudan. Revenge killings and cattle raids have been the major causes of intercommunal tensions.
