Sep 18, 2021 — It’s very disheartening that the entire land of Unity state has been swept and destroyed by unending flood, causing unprecedented humanitarian situations. Peoples’ livestock have died as a result of flood, and our people have nowhere to do their normal agricultural activities at the moment.

The Residents of Unity State and her sister counties of Ruweng Administrative Area had been staying on water like cold-blooded animals without food and shelter, and thus exposing them to starvation, diseases and death due to inadequate and slow humanitarian responses.

This life-threatening flood has caused widespread displacement of people from one place to another. We are however disappointed to see the national government and especially the ministry of humanitarian affairs standing aloof in the face of this deteriorating situations.

It is very wrong for the National government to leave this humanitarian crisis to the underfunded Unity State government and UN agencies alone. It is our wish to see positive and expeditious interventions from the national government.

The least that the national government could have done was to declare this flood a national disaster in Unity State so as to increase and louden the call for humanitarian intervention.

We, the undersigned Liech community leaders in Kenya and Uganda call on Unity state under the daring leadership of Dr. Joseph Nguen Manytuil to immediately initiate and spearhead an emergency regional conference on flood crisis in unity state.

We are certain of a solution when the relevant stakeholders converge on this matter. There is an old adage which says that ‘‘a problem shared is half solved.’’

The Unity state Government should not be reluctant to do wide consultation when it appears that they have no an iota of an idea or solution at hand. In our view, making a frequent visit to the flood affected population alone is not a solution.

We applaud the State government for keeping an eye on the prevailing humanitarian situation, but more practical actions need to be seen. The life of our people is in our hands, and we should act decisively without further delay. Finally, we further call on all our people and UN agencies to show up when this regional conference is convened.

Signed by,

  1. Cde. Dak Buoth Riek-Gaak, Chairperson of Liech community Association in Kenya
  2. Cde. Chak Gatnyang Riek, Chairperson, Liech community Association in Uganda
