“The Advance team for General Johnson Olony arrived in Juba today, 22 December, 2020, in anticipation of his appointment as the Governor of Upper Nile state,” the Office of the First Vice President announced on Tuesday.

President Salvar Kiir has been having a cold foot towards the appointment of Gen Olony as the governor of Upper Nile State.

“Once the decree is out, Johnson Olony will arrive in Juba so that he can proceed with the process of being sworn-in,” the main revitalized peace party stated.

He once insinuated that Gen Olony’s appointment might cause conflict in the State.

“[His appointment] is not an easy task [because] if it is somebody who will cause fighting or conflict, like in Upper Nile, I say ‘no’, because it will be on my neck later in the day,” Kiir” is quoted telling clerics in a meeting last month.

Kiir’s office described Olony as an “active soldier who has not fully subjected himself to the political development in Juba, and is not “within territories that are controlled by SPLM-IO or by the government.”

Olony’s team arrival to South Sudan’s capital shows that President Salva Kiir has finally rescinded his decision and agreed to appoint the SPLM-IO nominee, Gen. Johnson Olony, as Governor of Upper Nile State, ending months-long stalemate between the two Parties.

SPLM-IO said that Olony will come to South Sudan as soon as the president makes the decree to appoint him as the Upper State governor.

“Once the decree is out, Johnson Olony will arrive in Juba so that he can proceed with the process of being sworn-in,” the main revitalized peace party stated.

In accordance with the terms of the peace agreement, three states were allocated to the main armed opposition group, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – IO, including Upper Nile State, whose appointment of its governor has hit a snag.
