South Sudan VP for Gender and Youth Attends IGAD Summit of Heads of State and government

Dec 19, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster, H.E. Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, has arrived in Djibouti, the Capital of the Republic of Djibouti, to represent the country in the Summit of the IGAD heads of state and government.

According to a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, H.E. Nyandeng announced earlier on that she is traveling to Djibouti to represent the president, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

“I am leaving for Djibouti to represent the people of South Sudan and H.E the President of the Republic Salva Kiir Mayardit at the meeting of the IGAD heads of state and government,” Reads part of a statement attributed to the Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster.

According to Mabior, the summit is expected to “discuss important issues affecting the region.”

While leaving the country for Djibouti, Nyandeng announced her departure through the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation(SSBC) saying she is going to “represent the president in a conference within the region”.

The Vice President for Gender and Youth visited president Kiir on December 16, on Wednesday, to confirm her assignment and to brief the president on the progress her cluster has made.

“H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit was briefed in his Office, this Wednesday by the Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster H.E. Rebecca Nyandeng Garang De Mabior regarding the activities of the Ministries under her Cluster.” Read part of a statement released to media by President Kiir’s office.
“In her remarks to the media after the meeting, H.E. Rebecca Nyandeng Garang De Mabior said, H.E. President Salva Kiir commended her efforts and assigned her for a mission to represent him in a conference within the region.” The statement added.
In response to this assignment, intellectuals and critics questioned whether the assignment is in accordance with the revitalized peace agreement or not; however, no answers have been served so far.

The Summit is expected to address tensions in the region that include the ongoing political feud between Kenya and Somalia, and Sudan and Ethiopia.

The Summit is also expected to address internal political crises in Ethiopia, election crises in Uganda and peace implementation in Sudan and South Sudan.

Among the leaders whose arrival have been confirmed are the Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, IGAD Heads of State and Government and the Prime Minister of Sudan Abdalla Hamdouk, and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Amhed Ali.
