“The leader of rebellious forces from Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region said on Sunday in a text message to Reuters that his fighters had retaken the town of Axum from the federal military.” Reads part of Reuters report.

According to the Reuters report, the former Deputy Prime Minister and the current Chairman of the TPLF,  Debretsion Gebremichael whose location is unknown, made his claims on Sunday via text messages – hours after the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed celebrated military victory and promised to repatriate displaced IDPs and rebuild the region.

At the time of this report, the Ethiopian government was yet to respond to such claims; however, the Prime Minister has earlier on pledged that the federal police will bring the hold-out armed opposition leaders to book.

Axum or Aksum, is a historical town in Tigray Region, Ethiopia and the site of the historic capital of the Aksumite Empire, one of the most notable cities in northern Tigray region.

As fighting continues in the region, the federal government has switched off phone and internet networks in the region to frustrate communication within and outside the region.

In other reports, the Ethiopian ambassador to South Sudan, Amb. Fisseha Shawl, has left Juba abruptly as there are rumours that the TPLF leader could be in the country.
