Speaking to the media in the South Sudanese capital, the interim chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), Maj Gen. Charles Tai Gituai called on South Sudan’s RTGoNU government to support the establish of the Hybrid Court

“They [government] should support efforts to fast-track the establishment of the Hybrid Court of South Sudan” Said Gituai, adding that they should also ensure that the “transitional justice mechanisms, particularly in light of their ability to deal with human rights violations, including women’s rights violations” are enhanced.

The establishment of the Hybrid Court is one of the agreed mechanism in the peace document; however, the parties have not implemented anything major so far.

Despite repeated calls for Justice for war crimes and crimes against humanity between 2013 and 2019, South Sudan government has shown very little interest in the Hybrid Court.

Instead the government is working hard to get itself out of arms embargos and sanctions.

The RJMEC interim chair calls on South Sudan to approach the UN, AU, African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and peace guarantors to see where they how they can support and cooperate with the leaders.

Speaking of peace implementation, Gituai said that South Sudan peace process has been slowed by COVID-19, violation of cease fire agreement by NAS, intercommunal conflicts and lack of resources.
