Tonj Revenge attack leaves 10 people dead

Oct 09, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Another Revenge attack in Tonj County Warrap State has left ten people dead and 36 others wounded.

Unidentified cattle herders in Tonj county,

A local official said that the attack was caused by the killing of a young man in Ngap-Agook on his way back to Luanyjang Payam on Wednesday.

The Wednesday victim, who has been identified as a 25 years old Matoch Dongrin, was also linked to a revenge attack for an earlier strife.

Gabriel Awan, the former secretary-general of the defunct Tonj state, said that the fighting intensified on the second day after armed youth from the two communities of Luanyjang and Thiik engaged in cattle raiding.

“Luanyjang youth took the laws in their own hands; they came to Thiik area, intending to cross over to Ngap-Agook so that they could avenge their dear one that was killed and also recover their cows by force,” Gabriel Awan said.

“In that process, 10 people were killed and 36 others wounded on both sides.” He added.

For years, the country has experienced political, inter-ethnic, and inter-communal violence coupled with the country’s civil war.

Although President Salvar Kiir started a campaign in July that was aimed at disarming the civilians in order to end tribal violence in the country especially in Lakes State, that attempt was met with violence as youth resisted the disarmament.

The fighting between the army and the local youth, popularly known as Gelweng, left scores dead on both sides.

Some of the areas that were targeted by the campaign were Lakes, Terekeka, Warrap and Jonglei.

Exhausted and due to poor management of the disarmament, the SSPDF recently postponed the campaign especially in Tonj where the armed youth fought with the disarmament force.

More than 100 people died in the clashes between the army and the civilians.
