France’s Special Envoy to South Sudan and Sudan meets President Kiir

Oct 7, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — France’s Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Ambassador Jean-Michel Dumond, arrived in the South Sudan’s capital, Juba, and met with President Salva Kiir today.

Amb. Jean-Michel, a well informed French diplomat on Sudan and South Sudan, delivered a congratulatory message from his boss, President Emmanuel Macron to President Salva Kiir, on the recently signed Sudanese peace agreement.

“The France’s Special Envoy delivered a message of congratulations from President Emmanuel Macron to President Salva Kiir for the recently signed Sudanese Juba Peace Agreement on 3rd October 2020.” Said President Kiir’s spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deng Dau Deng, said the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, extended his message of congratulations to President Salva Kiir for leading the mediation of the Sudan’s Peace Agreement.

According to Deng Dau, the meeting also discussed the progress of the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement as well as the Sudanese Peace Agreement.

On his part, Emmanuel Macron’s Special Envoy, Amb. Jean-Michel Dumond, said the Government of France pledges its full support to the Government of South Sudan to implement the peace agreements of the two Sudans.

The French Ambassador reiterated that they discussed the support of France’s Government to help South Sudan through UN Security Council to ensure that the sanctions on South Sudan are lifted for the the smooth implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Ambassador Jean-Michel Dumond has served as an ambassador, head of delegation and Special Envoy of the European Union since in 1976.

Amb. Jean-Michel Dumond served as the Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sudan since 2016 where he was deeply involved mostly in Darfur.

Through Amb. Jean-Michel, the European Union invested hundreds of millions in community based projects such as Wadi el Ku Integrated Catchment Management project that was developed during Jean-Michel tenure.

When Sudan begin to head into crisis in late 2019, the European Union decided to replace Ambassador Jean-Michel Domund with a new face, Ambassador Robert van den Dool from Netherlands to “improve bilateral relations” between Sudan and the European Union.

Less than a year later, Ambassador Dumond returned to Sudan but this time as France Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan.

As the Special Envoy of the two Sudans, Ambassador Jean-Michel will most likely spend most of his time in Khartoum where he is well versed with the people and their culture.
