Catholic Church leaders meet Kiir to discuss peace implementation

A team of religious leaders from the Catholic church led by the Archbishop of Juba Catholic Diocese, Stephen Ameyu Martin, met with president Salva Kiir today, September 8, in the capital, Juba to discuss peace implementation.

Speaking to media after the meeting, the Executive Director in the Office of the President, James Deng Wal, said that President Salva Kiir urged the churches to continue to preach messages of peace, unity and love among the communities of South Sudan.
James Deng added that, President Salva Kiir assured the Catholic Bishop Conference of the ongoing progress on the implementation of the peace agreement.

According to the office of the president, the religious leaders met president Kiir to encourage him on the implementation of the peace agreement, and update him on the official re-opening of the Catholic Churches.
James Deng also said that President Salva Kiir instructed the religious leaders to observe social distancing in churches when they officially re-open across the country.

In conclusion, the Archbishop of Juba Catholic Diocese, Stephen Ameyu Martin said that President Salva Kiir appealed to the churches to work closely with the government to ensure that the Revitalized Peace Agreement is fully implemented.

Archbishop Ameyu Martin also added that the Catholic churches will officially re-open this month, on the 20th of September, while adhering to COVID-19 regulations.
