He was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016, two years before the release of the Black Panther and others Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Although a post on social media revealed in April this year that Boseman had lost weight significantly, he never talked about his health publicly leaving many of his fans concerned.

According to his family, he died at home with his wife and family beside him.

“He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side.”

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you so many of the films you have come to love so much,” the family’s statement reads.

Before the Black Panther, which broke many records and made a gross success of US$1.3 billion, Boseman was previously known for his role in Jackie Robinson where he played a role of a baseball legend in 2013.

Black Panther is the first African American superhero to get his own Marvel film and that, according to his family, was the honor of his career.

“It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther,” said a statement posted to Boseman’s social media accounts.

The family statement reiterated that he played these roles “during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy” treatments.

Boseman was born in South Carolina and graduated from Howard University.

Despite that his death has surprised fans and many public figures, millions of people are pouring in their condolences and wishing his family well.

Responding to the news, the Democratic party candidate, Jose Biden, described Boseman’s power as something “bigger than anything we saw on screen”-  adding that he “inspired generations and shown them they can be anything they want”

Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris, also sent her tributes to the family of Boseman.

Fellow actors and Marvel stars such Mark Ruffalo also sent in their tributes.

Boseman’s death came barely seven months after the tragic death of Kobe Bryant who died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Bryant died at the age of 41.
