August 14, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The Jieng Council of Elders (JCE) is planning to mediate between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and National Security Chief General Akol Koor Kuc over disagreement triggered by plans to replace the NSS chief.

In recent weeks, tensions have worsened between Kiir and Kuc after the NSS chief opened a private airport in a remote village in Tonj North County. The opening of the private airstrip which was blessed by South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) angered Kiir and later on ordered its immediate shutdown.

Last week, reports surfaced on social media that Akol Koor was placed under house arrest and senior government officials including President Salva Kiir Mayardit made remarks against Akol Koor for resisting reforms.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia this evening, a senior member of the Jieng Council of Elders (JCE), a tribal body that serves as an advisory board to the President said preparations were being made to reconcile the two men.

“There are plans and preparation which are ongoing to make a meeting between President Kiir and General Akol Koor. They are the backbone of the security in this country and that’s why they must come together,” the JCE official said on condition of anonymity.

There were no immediate comments from Kiir’s office as calls to Kiir’s spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny went unanswered.
