June 5, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan opposition leader has called on the government of president Salva Kiir Mayardit to investigate the killing of at least five unarmed civilians in the capital Juba on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning Lual Akook Wol, a South Sudan army leautenant colonel and a cousin of president Salva Kiir Mayardit, opened fire on unarmed citizens killing at least five people.

The killing sparked peaceful demonstrations in both Juba and Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, calling for the violence of the organized forces to be addressed.

In a tweet on Tuesday evening, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, the chairperson of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and secretary-general of the South Sudan Opposition Allaince (SSOA) denounced the killing.

Dr. Lam urged the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit to investigate the killing and bring indisplined members of the organized forces to justice.

“The incident in Sherikat yesterday laid bare the vulnerability of our law-abiding people to those who pay no heed to the rule of law,” the opposition leader wrote.

“Our condolences to and sympathy with the victims; the killed and the wounded, and urge thorough investigation in all aspects,” he further added.

Kiir later on yesterday formed an investigation committee into the incident.
