June 5, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s first vice-president and the country’s minister of defense have recovered from COVID-19 after nearly one month of self-quaratine, a spokesman for first vice president said.

Dr. Riek Machar and Angelina Teny, who is also his wife, had tested in May for the respiratory disease after an entire COVID-19 taskforce team tested positive for the virus.

The two have been in self-quarantine as well as their colleagues at the now defunct High-Level COVID-19 Taskforce.

In a statement this afternoon, James Gatdet Dak, Dr. Machar’s press secretary, said the two senior government officials have recovered after a last test returned negative yesterday.

“The second COVID-19 testing has returned NEGATIVE for both the First Vice President, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, and the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, H.E. Madam Angelina Teny,” the statement seen by Nyamilepedia said.

“This second test was conducted on Monday, 1 June, 2020, and the result came out on Thursday, 4 June, 2020. The two leaders are in good health and ready to resume their public duties,” it added.

The statement said the two will stay at home for another five days and will return to work next week, June 11 2020.

“In accordance with the new general criteria from the Ministry of Health, the two officials are required to remain in their residence for 10 more days from 1 June 2020 up to 10 June, 2020,” the statement said.

“They are therefore expected to resume their normal official duties by Thursday, 11 June, 2020,” it added.
