March 21st 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michel Bachelet, expressed serious concerns about the escalation of inter-tribal violence in central and eastern South Sudan over the past month, and urged the state authorities to stop the bloodshed and bring those responsible to justice.

“The formation of the Transitional National Unity Government has strengthened the hopes of the people of South Sudan for lasting peace … In order to bring lasting peace to the country, the issue of inter-tribal violence must be addressed and the perpetrators investigated and prosecuted,” he said in a statent in Geneva on Friday.

“It is also essential that peacebuilding between individual communities be undertaken,” he added.

According to the United Nations, hundreds have been killed, women and children subjected to sexual violence, and many homes have been burned, forcing thousands to seek refuge in temporary camps since the escalation of attacks since mid-February.

The increasing number and scope of weapons used by rival clans, along with the apparent failure of local and national authorities, including the security forces, have contributed to the escalation of violence.

It is worth noting that Jonglei state witnessed the outbreak of clashes again in the last period, as the United Nations reported dozens of deaths and injuries on February 19, while reports indicated that many houses were burned, which led to the flight of nearly 8,000 Civilians, mostly women and children, from their places of residence in search of safe places near the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in Pibor.
